For his passionate struggle to protect, promote and conserve Uganda's wildlife heritage, stake holders in the Conservation and Tourism fraternity has recognized President Yoweri Museveni with a award of excellence in Leadership for conservation.
According to the citation made by the chairman Board of Trustees (BoT) chairman, Uganda Wildlife Authority Mr. Benjamin Otto on March 3, 2013 at Pabidi West in Murchison Falls National Park, under the President Museveni led NRM administration; National parks have increased to 10 from 4 in 1986.
Presenting a plaque to the President, Mr. Otto said in the citation" At the time NRM came into power, the protected areas were characterized by acts of banditry and insecurity. As a result of his determined efforts, including the support to UWA notably the deployment of Specialized Wildlife Integrated Force for Tourism (SWIFT), training of rangers and the creation of the tourism police, these problems have been decisively dealt with.
Under his able leadership, the citation continued, the country is now enjoying peace, stability and tranquility, as a result of which the tourism industry is now beginning to flourish. Tourism is the second largest FOREX earner to the country.
His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has played a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of protected areas such as Mount Elgon through his sensitization visits and interventions.
In recognition of the said efforts and many other contributions, the Uganda Wildlife Authority hereby presents the award of Excellence in Conservation leadership.
