Wildlife marathon is an awareness brand for the World Wildlife day celebrations in Uganda. This is an annual event organized by UWA and partners under the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities.

The marathon has been organized since 2016 and has attracted participants from government, private sector, academia and general public. Every year, participants run various distances with a cause / theme which is identified to address some of the global and national challenges within the wildlife fraternity.

ORGANISING PARTNERS

At every edition, Uganda Wildlife Authority on behalf of the ministry of tourism spearheads organizing of the wildlife marathon.  UWA establishes an organizing team for the marathon drawing members from within and other wildlife / tourism agencies in the country. This organizing team updates and reports to the main organizing committee of the national wildlife day celebrations.

RUNNING CAUSE / THEME

The theme for wildlife marathon 2018 shall be “Creating a safe environment for the survival of Big Cats”

DATE

The date for wildlife marathon 2018 shall be Sunday 25th February 2018. This is the last Sunday before the international day celebrations on 3rd March 2018.

VENUE

Uganda museum shall remain as venue for the third edition of Wildlife Marathon 2018.

DISTANCES AND ROUTE

Third edition will provide running routes for the following distances (5km, 10km, and 21km). These shall be run by both ladies and men.

Routes shall be created to pass through communities with diverse backgrounds. Schools, business areas, general public places like markets, amongst other so that the marathon message is received by majority.

PARTICIPANTS

Wildlife marathon 2018 will have participants from across a wide range of communities. These shall come from public servants, private sector, civil society organizations, students, and the general public. Professional athletes shall also be invited through the Uganda athletics federation.

REGISTRATION

Registration shall be made through any of the following 3 ways;-

  1. Registration at gazzeted centers
  2. Mobile money (MTN (0772410550) and Airtel (0703410550) Lillian Kabogoza Nali
  3. Bank (For corporate registrations)

REGISTRATION CATEGORIES

Every participant shall have to first register so as to be eligible to run at the 2018 wildlife marathon. The following registration categories shall be applicable:-

  1. Individual registration

Individual registration shall go for 20,000/=. This shall be registration for one person and shall be provided with the following after payment:-

  • Running vest
  • Running bottle
  • Running number
  1. Team registration

Team registration shall go for 500,000/= this shall cater for registration of 8 individuals and shall be provided with the following:-

  • Running vests
  • Running bottles
  • Running numbers
  • VIP Tickets (2)
  • Team Certificate
  • Corporate registration

Corporate registration shall go for 1,000,000/= this shall cater for registration of 10 individuals and shall be provided with the following:-

  • Running vests
  • Running bottles
  • Running numbers
  • Tent (50 Seater)
  • VIP tickets (3)
  • Team Certificate

Registration centers:

Registration centers for the marathon shall be distributed across various social centers. The following have been proposed centers for 2018 marathon registrations:-

  1. MTWA
  2. UWA, UWEC, UTB
  • UTA, AUTO, USAGA, TUGATA
  1. Street registrations

OFFICIATION

Officiation at the marathon shall be handled by technical officials from Uganda athletics federation. These shall provide for approximately 150 technical officials for both road and venue coverage.

SCORING

Each participant will be manually scored. A team of dedicated timers amongst the technical officials will record timings for each participant that finishes a particular distance. These shall be compiled and as participants leave at the end of the day’s event, each shall be provided with his or her recorded timings. A link shall also be created for those that wish to access their timing records online.

AWARDS

Marathon awards shall be given after the marathon runs. The best runners shall be given cash prizes for the following categories:-

  • Best corporate institution
  • Best team
  • Individuals shall be awarded as below
  1. 5km
  • Male

1st, 2nd 3rd 

  • Female

1st 2nd 3rd

  1. 10km
  • Male

1st, 2nd 3rd

  • Female

1st 2nd 3rd

  • 21km
  • Male

1st, 2nd 3rd 

  • Female

1st 2nd 3rd

Note: Winners (1st position) of each category will have an opportunity of visiting the home of big cats. The best team and the best corporate team will each provide one representative who will join winners that will be visiting the home of Uganda’s big cats.

SECURITY

UWA law enforcement team and the Uganda police shall be brought on board to ensure that maximum security is provided during the marathon both at the venue and on the marathon routes.

MEDICAL

A team of medical attendants shall be provided during the marathon. These shall be on site and in ambulances.

ENTERTAINMENT

On the marathon day, various categories of entertainment shall be provided. Cultural artists, Acrobats, musicians and school performances shall all be provided.

A children center with children play items shall also be provided.
